Accessibility at the Parramatta Female Factory

A Welcoming Historic Experience for Everyone

Parramatta Female Factory Friends welcomes visitors of all ages and abilities to discover one of Australia’s most significant historic places.

We are committed to making our guided walking tours, educational programs and visitor experiences as inclusive, enjoyable and accessible as reasonably possible.

The Parramatta Female Factory and Institutions Precinct is a National Heritage-listed site containing buildings, courtyards, walls and pathways dating from different periods of Australian history.

As an authentic historic setting, the precinct has a variety of ground surfaces, and visitors may encounter uneven sections, historic thresholds and changes in surface levels.

We encourage visitors with mobility, sensory, communication or other accessibility requirements to contact our Tour Coordinator before booking. We will discuss your individual needs and the arrangements that may help you enjoy your visit.

Walking Tours and Historic Ground Surfaces

Our guided tours generally take approximately 90 minutes, including regular stops where our guides explain the history and significance of the buildings and the women and children associated with the Female Factory.

The historic precinct is predominantly level, although the walking route includes surfaces of different ages, materials and conditions.

Visitors should be aware of the following:

  • Different ground surfaces: Modern pathways, paved areas, historic stonework and outdoor surfaces may vary in texture, firmness and evenness.
  • Uneven sections: Some surfaces may contain minor irregularities, joints, changes in level or other features associated with the age and historic character of the precinct.
  • Ramps and thresholds: Ramps provide access at some locations. One historic building has a small gutter or threshold that visitors must negotiate.
  • Walking and standing: Tours include periods of walking, standing and listening to historical explanations.
  • Seating: Seating is available at selected locations but may not be provided at every tour stop.
  • Outdoor conditions: Some parts of the tour are exposed to sunshine, wind and rain, with varying levels of shade.

The route may change depending on building access, conservation work, weather, group requirements and operational conditions.

We recommend comfortable, enclosed footwear suitable for outdoor walking.

Wheelchairs, Walking Frames and Mobility Aids

Visitors who use wheelchairs, walking frames, walking sticks or other mobility aids are welcome to enquire about our guided tours.

The generally level grounds and ramps at some locations make many areas accessible to visitors using mobility aids. However, the different historic ground surfaces, occasional thresholds and other physical features may present difficulties for some visitors.

Not every area or building can necessarily be accessed independently by every mobility aid.

Please contact our Tour Coordinator before booking so we can discuss the current route and any adjustments that may be helpful.

Depending on the circumstances and volunteer availability, we may be able to arrange a modified route, additional rest stops or an alternative way of presenting parts of the tour.

Our aim is to ensure visitors have accurate information and an opportunity to participate in a manner appropriate to their individual needs.

Visitors Who Prefer a Slower Pace

We recognise that some visitors may have limited stamina, difficulty standing for extended periods or a preference for a gentler walking pace.

Our guides aim to provide an enjoyable and informative experience without unnecessary rushing.

For group bookings, we can discuss adjustments such as shorter walking routes, a slower pace, more frequent rest stops or an alternative emphasis on particular buildings and historical stories.

Please discuss these requirements before the tour so suitable arrangements can be considered.

Hearing, Vision, Sensory and Learning Requirements

History should be accessible in more ways than simply walking through buildings.

Visitors with hearing or vision impairments, sensory sensitivities, learning requirements or communication needs are encouraged to let us know how we can assist.

Our volunteer guides can discuss adapting the presentation, pace and style of their explanations to suit different visitors.

For schools, home-school groups, disability support organisations and other educational groups, we welcome advance discussion about tailoring the tour’s content and delivery to the participants’ learning needs.

Carers, Support Persons and Assistance Animals

Carers, companions and support persons are welcome.

Please advise us when booking if a visitor will be accompanied by a carer or support person so we can confirm the applicable booking arrangements.

Visitors travelling with assistance animals should contact us beforehand so that current site access arrangements can be confirmed.

Sensitive Historical Content

The Parramatta Female Factory has a complex history involving imprisonment, punishment, childbirth, family separation, institutionalisation, resistance and resilience.

Some historical accounts may be distressing to visitors, particularly those with personal or family connections to institutional experiences.

Our guides aim to present these histories respectfully and sensitively.

Visitors are welcome to discuss any concerns beforehand or advise the guide if they would prefer not to participate in a particular discussion.

Accessible and Bespoke Group Tours

Parramatta Female Factory Friends develops tailored tours for schools, universities, community groups, seniors’ organisations, family historians and specialist educational groups.

We welcome enquiries from disability support organisations, retirement communities and groups requiring an adapted tour experience.

Where practical, the Tour Coordinator can work with your group to adjust the itinerary, presentation, duration and rest arrangements.

Our objective is to provide a meaningful and rewarding heritage experience suited to the needs of your group.
